Information About Long Term Skill Shortage Work Visa In New Zealand

The Long Term Skill Shortage Work Visa provides a pathway to permanent residency in New Zealand. You must be 55 years old or younger, have the requisite work experience, qualifications, and occupational registration to work in a Long Term Skill Shortage List (LTSSL) occupation, and have a job offer in that occupation to apply for a visa under this category. The most vital eligibility criterion is that you must be eligible to accept the job offer based on your credentials and/or experience (including any specific requirements set out on the LTSSL).

Once you receive your visa, you must comply with some requirements. You must apply for entry permission when you arrive in New Zealand. This can be done by filling out an arrival card that was handed to you on your flight to New Zealand. You can be refused entry permission if:

  • your circumstances have changed since you were granted a visa

  • you don’t meet the character requirements

  • a New Zealand official requests your fingerprints or an iris scan, you decline to take your photograph or provide your fingerprints or iris scan.

You have three months to arrive in New Zealand after receiving your visa. You have up to 30 months to travel in and out of New Zealand when you arrive. In any 12 months, you can study for up to three months

This visa category allows you to become a permanent resident of New Zealand. Working in a profession where there is a scarcity of New Zealanders for up to 30 months is a smart way to begin the journey to obtaining residency in New Zealand.

You must work in the LTSSL-specified occupation, for the specific employer, and in the specific location detailed in the job offer that was the basis of your work visa application while on this visa. You can apply for a resident visa in New Zealand if you work in that occupation for two years on LTSSL

Your dependent children or partner cannot be included in your work visa application, but they can apply for visas based on their relationship with you. Also, keep in mind that new applications for this visa will be closed on October 31, 2021. From November 1, 2021, it will be replaced by the Accredited Employer Work Visa.
