Updated Travel Restrictions To New Zealand Due To COVID-19

Updated: Feb 15, 2022

After April 28, 2021, only New Zealand citizens and their immediate family members (including the parent of a dependent child who is a New Zealand citizen) and those with substantial humanitarian reasons (an exceptionally high threshold will be required) may be permitted to enter the country.

India, Brazil, Pakistan, and Papua New Guinea have all been categorized as high-risk countries in recent years. These visitors are only permitted to enter New Zealand after spending 14 days outside of these high-risk countries before their arrival. Permitted travelers must have a negative nasopharyngeal RT-PCR (PCR) test result from an accredited laboratory within 72 hours of departure. No other types of tests qualify.

All other permitted travelers, including New Zealand citizens, critical workers, and their immediate family members with valid visas, must spend 14 days outside the specified high-risk countries before arriving in New Zealand unless they are only transiting through one.

All other permitted travelers must complete a 14-day stay in managed isolation or quarantine unless they are traveling directly from a country that is considered a quarantine-free travel zone and the individual has spent 14 days in that country (these countries include Australia, Cook Islands, and Niue). Due to the latest COVID-19 infections, travel from Western Australia has been halted.

Holders of valid visas from non-high-risk countries must spend 14 days in managed isolation or quarantine if they travel outside of quarantine-free zones.
